What If AI Created More Jobs Instead of Replacing Them?

Every conversation about artificial intelligence seems to begin with the same question:

Will AI replace our jobs?

It’s an understandable concern. Headlines often focus on automation, disruption, and the occupations most vulnerable to technological change.

But what if we’re asking the wrong question?

Instead of focusing on what AI might replace, we should be asking where it can create new value.

Across Canada, thousands of SMEs recognize AI’s potential but don’t have the expertise—or the capacity—to figure out where to start. At the same time, thousands of students are entering the workforce eager to develop the very skills businesses are beginning to need.

We’ve been treating these as two separate challenges. But what if those challenges aren’t separate at all? What if they’re actually part of the same solution?

Picture a student joining a growing business for a work placement. They’re not there to sit in on meetings or spend weeks filing documents. They’re helping map business processes, identify repetitive tasks, evaluate AI tools, draft marketing content, analyze customer data, build dashboards, or test workflow automation.

The student graduates with hands-on experience using technologies that employers increasingly value. Meanwhile, the business gets dedicated capacity to explore AI in ways it may never have had the time or resources to pursue.

Rather than solving two problems independently, one work placement begins to address both.

This is where the conversation about AI starts to shift. Instead of asking what work AI can replace, a more useful question is how AI can help people create more value. And for students entering the workforce, that means learning how to use these tools not as a shortcut, but as a way to contribute more effectively from day one.

Too often, the conversation focuses on what AI might replace. But another question deserves just as much attention: what new opportunities could it create?

When students are given meaningful work—not just administrative tasks—they learn how to apply AI responsibly in real business settings. They develop judgment alongside technical skills, understanding not just what the technology can do, but where human insight still matters.

Employers benefit too. They gain fresh perspectives, stronger digital fluency across their teams, and dedicated capacity to experiment with new tools and ways of working.

The impact extends beyond a single placement. More productive businesses strengthen local economies. Graduates enter the workforce with practical AI experience. Over time, Canada builds the talent and organizational capability needed to compete in an AI-enabled economy.

None of this happens automatically, of course. It depends on introducing AI thoughtfully—with clear objectives, appropriate oversight, and a focus on solving real business problems rather than adopting technology for its own sake.

There are real challenges to making this work. Our research found that many SMEs have no formal AI policy, limited understanding of data privacy, and little experience supervising AI-assisted work. At the same time, students may be comfortable using AI tools but still need guidance on critical thinking, verification, ethics, and professional judgment.

Responsible AI adoption is not simply about giving people access to new tools.

It is about helping them build the judgment to use those tools well: to question outputs, verify information, understand limitations, and decide when technology is useful—and when it is not.

That is why workforce development needs to be treated as part of Canada’s AI strategy, not as a separate conversation.

If we focus only on building better AI systems, we risk missing an equally important challenge: preparing people to use those systems responsibly, effectively, and in ways that actually improve how work gets done.

The good news is that Canada is not starting from scratch.

We have strong educational institutions. We have ambitious students looking for meaningful experience. And we have thousands of SMEs that need practical, affordable support to begin applying AI inside their businesses.

The opportunity is in inserting students and recent graduates into SMEs to work on clearly defined AI integration projects with guardrails for responsible, human-centred implementation, the country can simultaneously strengthen early-career pathways and accelerate AI diffusion across its productive base.

Perhaps the future of AI won’t be defined by how many jobs it replaces.

Perhaps it will be defined by how many people it empowers.

If we invest in helping the next generation learn to use AI thoughtfully—and give businesses the capacity to put those skills into practice—we won’t just prepare Canadians for the future of work.
