From Banking to Buying Businesses: Mike Morawetz’s ETA Journey

Meet Mike Morawetz, an entrepreneur whose path from corporate finance to business ownership illustrates why more Canadians are choosing Entrepreneurship Through Acquisition (ETA).

Originally from Toronto, Mike moved to Calgary in 2014 after completing his graduate degree in Finance in London, UK. Over the past 11 years, he’s worn many hats—banker, corporate finance professional, and small business owner. But it was his decision to step fully into entrepreneurship that truly reshaped his career.

Why Mike Chose Entrepreneurship

Mike’s inspiration came early. Growing up, his father was a self-employed medical professional, planting the entrepreneurial seed. For Mike, working for himself was always the goal.

After years in banking and corporate finance, however, he realized something wasn’t clicking. He felt unchallenged, disconnected, and unmotivated:

  • A need for independence: “I’m a bad employee,” Mike admits. “I’m an independent thinker, don’t like being told what to do, and find it almost a requirement to question or test any and all accepted norms.”
  • Love for problem-solving: He thrived on tackling challenges and found the most rewarding parts of his career were in managing teams and acquiring/operating businesses.
  • Desire for impact: Mike wanted more than a desk job—he wanted to lead, build, and grow.

Eventually, the pull was too strong to ignore. He took the leap into full-time entrepreneurship, for better or worse.

Building and Buying Businesses

Today, Mike is the force behind several ventures:

  • Shotover Cleaning and Restoration Inc.: Acquired in 2024, the company specializes in  commercial and residential cleaning and restoration solutions for all types of flooring. Recently, Mike expanded operations into the Greater Calgary Area.
  • Fundit Capital Inc.: An asset-based lending platform that helps Canadian SMEs access financing.
  • Real Estate Holdings: owns and operates rental properties in Calgary. While once a strong investment vehicle, Mike sees Canadian rental markets as less viable today—proof that entrepreneurship often means reassessing and pivoting.
  • Upcoming Acquisition: Mike and his business partner are set to add another business to their growing portfolio.

Previously, Mike also operated as a contractor for FedEx Ground Canada in BC, running last-mile delivery services until FedEx brought operations in-house in 2024.

Lessons from the Entrepreneurial Journey

Mike is the first to admit that entrepreneurship isn’t for everyone. His advice:

  • Get comfortable being uncomfortable. Owning a business is a 24/7 commitment for you, your employees, and their families.
  • Assess your support system. You’ll need to lean on friends and family—this journey affects more than just you.
  • Choose your business partners carefully. Avoid the “busy trap,” embrace failure as a learning opportunity, and never forget to laugh.

Why ETA Matters for Canada

Mike’s journey highlights the power of ETA as a path to entrepreneurship. Instead of starting from scratch, ETA lets you step into established businesses with teams, customers, and cash flow already in place.

And the timing couldn’t be better:

  • 76% of small business owners plan to exit their business in the next ten years.
  • 54,000+ small businesses are currently for sale across Canada.
  • Nearly $2 trillion in assets is at stake over the next decade.

Without new ownership, many of these businesses will close, taking jobs, knowledge, and community value with them.
